It’s hard to understand why someone would join a terrorist organization. “How can these people do such horrible things?” we might ask after seeing the latest leaked video of a journalist’s beheading, or footage of someone with an AK-47 unloading a barrage of gunfire into a crowd; “These people must be monsters!” one might exclaim from the comfort of their living room a world away.
